Physical Education including Swimming

At St Mary’s it is our intent to inspire and encourage our children to want to lead a healthy lifestyle, to succeed and even excel in competitive sports and have an understanding of personal wellbeing. We provide opportunities for our children to become physically confident supporting their health and fitness, to participate in activities that will build on their characters and embed our values of fairness, respect and encouragement to be the best they can be. To support physical development and healthy lifestyle choices we provide daily fruit to all pupils, we have in a specialist dance teacher providing dance and gymnastics, a qualified rugby coach, outdoor learning sessions and forest school sessions. We make good use of our beautiful grounds where we have wellington boots on hand for all year round play and we also undertake regular swimming lessons throughout the year for all year groups at our local swimming pool offering infants and juniors 19 weeks over the course of the year, we also offer weekly after school sports clubs for all key stages.

We have an extensive physical education curriculum and through this it is therefore our aim:

  • To develop competence in a broad range of physical activities.
  • To ensure pupils are physically active for sustained periods of time.
  • To enable pupils to engage in competitive sports and activities lead healthy, active lives.
  • To develop healthy lifestyles and wellbeing.
